I AM HERE

McGuffey Art Gallery, June 2022
Solo Performance

I created a circuit board with photo-resistors and attached it to my arm. My movements triggered recordings of my voice, articulating the words, "I", "am" "here", in random order. My breath, also an audible force throughout the performance, guides and punctuates my movements.

At a historical moment when women’s bodies, and other racialized, queer, and non-normative bodies are excised of their agency, through the violences of sexual assaults, legal rulings, and social binaries, I enact more expansive ways of being. I refuse limiting taxonomies, and fuse my body with a telephone that could have saved me in a past violent encounter. I become machine. I become timeless. I become me.

The arbitrary as well as calculated performance of "presence" mimics the indeterminate aspects of trauma work. Who or what is the "I"? Where is "here"?
