Investigation #1: A Polyphonic Dialogue in the Mundane
In dialogue with Spyridon Simotas
Over the course of a week, we texted each other sounds from the immediacy of our respective environments, with no spoken or written exchange.
Through call and response, we explore the contingencies of causality: What prompts another’s response? What assumptions and associations are made to trigger the choice for the next sound? What is language and how permeable is it? By shifting registers of communication from the discursive to the sonic, we bring the fulcrum points of our habituated responses and actions, into relief. We discover a world of meaning often not accessed with an emphasis on the spoken and written, the primary mode of communication in academic settings. We become present with sounds of the mundane, and discover their potential to give rise to new forms of coherence and connection.
